Slow and Steady Wins the Race/ The Race between the Hare and the Tortoise

A hare is a very speedy animal. He can run very fast. But a tortoise moves very slowly. Once upon a time a hare was very proud of his speed and cut a joke at a tortoise. Once the tortoise challenged (শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব প্রমাণের জন্য প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা করা) the hare and invited him to run a race with him. The hare who was very proud of his speed said to the tortoise, "Listen friend tortoise, you are simply going to waste
your time and my time as well. You know my speed. To beat you to me is as easy as taking some tender grass from the field." The tortoise in return said, "I know your speed but there is still something which I know but you don't know." However, they both went to a fox and asked him to be the judge of their contest. The fox agreed and on an appointed day they met at crossroads. Finally the unequal race
began. The hare, from the beginning started running at a top speed and soon left the tortoise far behind. Crossing almost half of the distance the hare looked back. There was no sign of the tortoise around. the hare smiled and said to himself, "I am really a fool. Why should I run so fast in the hot sun with the slow, old tortoise?I will start again when the tortoise will catch up, before that let me have a rest." So thinking he lay down to have a rest under a shady (R) tree. But, as he was little tired, soon fell asleep (T). The tortoise on the other hand went along his slow but steady way. He never stopped nor looked back and at last passed the proud hare and reached the finishing spot well ahead of the hare. The hare knowing not when he fell asleep, awoke with a start and looking back found no sign of the tortoise. Still satisfied with himself, he started running. But on reaching the finishing spot, he saw the tortoise gossiping with the fox, the judge of the race.
However, the proud hare admitted his defeat and requested the tortoise to tell
him on which thing he capitalized as he said before the race. Then the tortoise said, "You should know friend: Pride goes before a fall and slow and steady wins the race."

Where There is a Will, There is a Way

It was a summer day and a crow became very thirsty. It began to move here and
there in search of drinking water but in vain. The crow did not lose hope. It, at last, noticed a jar at a little distance. It at once flew to it but there was a little water at the bottom of the jar. The water of the jar was not reachable to the crow. The crow was really dying for water. It did not lose hope even when it failed to reach the bottom of the jar with its bill. It looked around for help, thought over this or that but nothing worked. It said to itself, "If I give up trying I will simply die from thirst. So, I need to find out some ways and means to get water from the jar. At last I will have found water after a long search. Now managing to have water from the jar is my business. I must try a hundred times before I give in and die from thirst." This thought renewed its mental strength more than ever before.Suddenly a thought crept up into its mind and it began to fly around from one place to another in search of pieces of stones or brick, lumps of dry mud. It got many of them and brought all the pieces near the jar and then picked up the pieces one by one and dropped them into the jar. This time its plan worked. With a happy surprise it saw that the level of water was gradually rising up from the bottom. This result of its effort again
invigorated ( 4) its spirit and strength. It dropped all the pieces of stones and brick bats into the jar and finally the level of water rose high enough for it to touch it with its bill. The crow took a deep breath, heaved out a sigh of relief and drank the water with its hearts fill and succeeded in saving itself.

to caw its best. But the moment it opened its mouth the piece of meat fell to
the ground only to be snapped by the fox.
"That will do. That was all I wanted. In exchange for your meat I will give you
a piece of advice," "No, that is not possible," said the fox,
"But I must give you the advice for the future: Do Not Trust Flatterers.
" So saying the fox left, the unhappy crow brooding over its foolishness.

 Education has No Shortcut Way

Liton is a brilliant student. Though he wants to make good result, he does not
attend classes regularly. Rather, going to a coaching center, he memorises
answers from guide books and sheets and finds that he cannot cut a good figure
in the exams. One day his class teacher called him and said, "Liton, if you go
on this way, I'm afraid your academic life will fall flat. Remaining absent from
classes is also disgraceful, you should understand it." However, Liton thought
in a different way. He thought that the coaching center he went to was not a
good one. He decided to get admitted to another coaching center, and also change
guide books. He did accordingly, and continued to miss his classes.
One day the yearly exam came. Liton went to the exam hall with a trembling heart.
When he got the question paper, he went through it, and found most questions
unknown. He could answer the questions of only 30 marks.
He faced the same disappointment () in the exams of other subjects. Then when the
result came out, he found to his surprise that his name was not there in the
passing students' list. Liton felt sad and humiliated. He remembered what his
class teacher had warned him.
From that day, he started attending classes regularly. He now listened to the
teachers' lectures very attentively and jotted down every important point. Liton
now made his own notes, and stopped going to the coaching center.
Liton appeared at the annual exam for the second time.
The result eventually came out, and it showed Liton standing first in order of
merit. He sat for the SSC exam, and got GPA-5. Thus, he proved himself a really
brilliant student.

It was a holiday. Rimi was staying home alone as her. parents had gone to their
village home. They told Rimi to remain careful and also assured that they would
come back before evening. She thought of making a good use of her lonely time.
She was fond of reading adventure stories and so started reading one.
Suddenly she heard a sound of animallike creature. As Rimi, was an adventure
story lover, she took it differently. She supposed it might be a devilish
creature. She instantly (te) felt terrified, and was trembling (1). The sound was
coming frequently. Out of fear, Rimi started crying. She went to a corner of her
bed, and lay wrapping herself with a blanket.
Suddenly, the sound came very near. Rimi tried to bring courage, and looked
curiously. She saw that two bright green eyes were fixed at her. She burst out
in a scream and fainted.
When she regained her sense, she saw her parents' anxious face before her. Her
mother was pouring cool water on her head. Rimi cried out, and hugged her mother.
She told everything to them. Her father then said, "Foolish girl, it was a pussy
cat that entered our house somehow. I know you're fond of adventure stories, and
those stories make you believe in many strange things. My advice is read those
stories for pleasure, but don't take them in literal sense. Because many things
in them do not resemble reality." Rimi was ashamed, and vowed not to believe in
strange ideas any more.

A Trifling Matter Should Not Be Turned into a Big Issue

Lina is a student of class ten. One day in the afternoon she was gossiping with
her friend beside a pond near her house. While gossiping she noticed two small
boys quarreling over a trifling matter. She did not take it seriously thinking
that their quarrel would come to an end soon. But the quarrel was going on. All
on a sudden, one boy hit the other. The other boy returned the blow. Both of
them got hurt, and returned home calling each other names. They told the incident
to their parents.
Next morning, both the boys' fathers met each other. They asked for an explanation
of the incident from each other. Each of them was obstinate to save his own son,
and they too involved in a quarrel.
Both of them had gangsters of their own, and they began to fight in the afternoon.
Many men were wounded, and were taken to the upazila hospital. Some others fled to
save themselves.
A complaint was filed to the village arbitrator (fy fool). The judge came to know
that the fight had originated from a quarrel of two small boys, and a girl named
Lina had witnessed it.  She was summoned to the meeting, and she narrated the
whole happening. Now, it was clear that they had quarreled over a simple matter.
The arbitrator rebuked the two boys' fathers, and fined both of them with a good
amount of money. He also told them to teach their sons the value of tolerance.
He said, "A simple thing has ridiculously become a serious issue." While the
trial was going on, surprisingly the two boys were playing and having fun between
themselves.

There is a Treasure in the Field

Once there lived an old farmer. He had two sons. They were strong but lazy. They
slept all day long in the shade. They did not bother to help their old father to
plough or water and cultivate the field. Just before he died, the farmer said to
his sons: "My dear sons, I have a secret, I always hid it from you. I was afraid
to tell you earlier lest you should waste the money hidden in my field. But now,
before I die, I have to tell you the truth." Soon after their father's death, the boys met together and argued: "Dad said that in the field there is a treasure, that if we dig it out, we will find it. Most
likely, the treasure is hidden close to the house, so that robbers might not easily
take it away. Come on! Let us begin our work!". The two sons took their spades and
started digging the field. They dug hard but could not find any treasure. The
field was well dug but the two sons were disappointed. Before leaving the field
they spread the seeds of melon (G). After a few days young plants grew and the
whole field looked nice. After a few months the field was full of melons. They
gathered the melons and sold them in the market. They earned a lot of money.
Now the sons realized that the melons were the treasure. From that day, they
started working hard in the field.

line. Suddenly he noticed that a small railway slipper was about to collapse. A
little while later, he remembered that a mail train was supposed to cross in about
half an hour. He was at a loss thinking about what to do. He discussed the matter

Suddenly a fantastic plan came into the mind of Ratan. Once he heard that by
showing something red, one can stop train. By his ready wit he put off his red
shirt and hoisted it in the air when he heard a train to come along the crack line.
He tried to attract the attention of the driver. Unbelievably the driver saw the
red shirt, of the boy and stopped the train just before the crack. The driver got
down from the train and noticed the line. All the passengers and the driver
praised the witty boy for whom all of them got a new life.
